Letters to the Editor
Thanking Thomas E Pericak, P.E., Buffalo Division Director New York State Thruway Authority for his letter of June 30 in response to a recent article I wrote regarding car-pooling and tips for fellow motorists, I have wrote him back on the following.
Your suggestion that the NYS Thruway Authority’s action of including a link entitled Good Going-Smarter Transportation Choices for WNY on your website is your “role as an environmental steward” falls far short of the many things that your association SHOULD be doing to help the motorists of WNY.
Your letter provided me with instructions on how to locate this link. Thank goodness, because it was nearly impossible to find. I can’t imagine that anyone who was searching for it on their own would be able to find it him or herself.
Had I not received this letter from you leading me to look for that link, I would have never thought to look for it. Perhaps you should send this letter to the hundreds of thousands of riders that you service.
But wait, wouldn’t it make much more sense for you to post the website address (goodgoingwny.com or wnycarpool.com) on your electronic signs? You’d be reaching thousands of people every minute, instead of just one at a time!
The only reason that I can think of that you would NOT publicize carpool information predominantly, is that you DON’T want to see a decrease in vehicles, because it would mean fewer dollars earned in tolls.
It must be too, that you aren’t sitting in the traffic jam every night on the 290 at the 90 interchange like I am with 50,000 other riders.
And in reference to your Park and Ride facilities “encouraging WNY carpooling”, you must be joking. I exit at #49 every night. And every night the cars exiting and entering that lot are in danger. The grade is so far below the road that they often can’t get out in the winter, and the entrance is directly in the way of the traffic entering and exiting between the tollbooths and the traffic signal. There is no restroom there, no gas station.
You say that you are encouraging WNY carpooling at these interchanges, then why don’t you post billboards at your Park and Ride Facilities with carpool websites to help riders find other people? Why don’t your tollbooth personnel pass out bumper stickers with the carpool website address? Why don’t you put notices or bumper stickers in the monthly E-Pass invoices? Or send a mass email blast out to all of your readers?
Mr. Pericak, rather than boasting what you’re doing for your rider ship, you should be ashamed at how little you have done.
Very truly yours,
Coleen Czechowski
