Considering I attended all the Town Board work sessions and regular meetings where the Shady Side Lane student parking issues were discussed, as well as the recent town and school board joint meetings, I was rather baffled and disturbed by the recent Lancaster Bee editorial conclusion that the “town and school district have done all they can do” to resolve the issue.
At their joint work session, the school district told town councilmen Ron Ruffino and John Abraham that they would look into whatever possibility existed to free up more parking spaces.
The school district also agreed with the Shady Side Lane residents that their street should be signed, and that the possibility of signing the next street, Pine View, should also be considered.
Such action would take away the possibility of students trespassing through yards to shortcut getting to school. Should those steps fail, the school district suggested meeting next year to consider other options.
Ruffino’s statement that most Shady Side Lane residents that signed the petition did so to be nice, or because they didn’t understand the issue and the consequence of signs is nothing more than a “It’s not in my back yard so I don’t care.”
To tell the residents of Shady Side that the problem will only move to another street and that they should learn to live with the aggravation, trespassing and safety impacts is arbitrary and capricious considering adjacent school streets have received like restrictive parking signage.
While the Bee advocates waiting for the majority of the residents to decide what they want to determine whether signage should take place, I favor the request made by the residents of Shady Side Lane, namely, “If it’s not such a big problem, take down all the parking signs that had been previously posted on all the other streets.”
