Lancaster Supervisor Robert Giza, serving as committee Chair for the town’s 175th anniversary celebration, reviewed the schedule of activities planned at the recent Town Board work session.
He informed the group that the removal of the Town Hall cornerstone to reveal the time capsule placed within would take place before the public on June 2nd. The date chosen coincides with a regularly scheduled Monday board meeting and will take place at 6 p.m.
Giza again joked that he hoped that the building wouldn’t collapse and that the time capsule contained something worthy, not someone’s lunch.
He declared that he was having two replacement boxes made; one shoe-box size and the other even smaller. “The replacement box has to be inserted immediately,” stated Giza.
Planned activities
Historical Society
May 3rd, 12 noon, $12/person. 175 year-old fashion show displaying garments of the period.
Dunn Tire Speedway
May 10th, Clarence and Lancaster residents and families free with proof of residency, time as yet undetermined.
The Speedway is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The operation has reverted to a previous owner who pledges to honor the noise ordinance. Board members agreed that there would be noise complaints as usual, especially from new residents moving in and not knowing what to expect.
Giza declared that he felt bad for those moving into areas where their quality of life could be impacted, but if they chose to move by creeks, they should expect water problems; next to railroad tracks, noise; near a speedway that has been in operation 50 years, noise.
Lancaster Bee Special Edition
Giza mentioned that a special edition of the Lancaster Bee would be published on May 22, 2008 detailing Lancaster’s history and the special event celebrations planned.
Hull House
175 anniversary celebration days will be held at the Hull House on June 7th (Saturday) and June 8th (Sunday). Festivities and events from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free as the event is being underwritten by the town..
There will be exhibits, tours, food vendors, period games, pony cart rides, ice cream making, farm animals, plant sales and an anniversary cake and ice cream celebration event.
Lancaster Rural Cemetery tours
Free tours at 2 p.m. every Sunday in June. 11,000 interred in the 44 acre cemetery. First burials in 1808. Interested individuals are invited to meet at the Historical Building on May 25th for a video presentation.
Civil War Reenactment
Saturday, October 4th, Bowmansville Fire Hall. Participants dressed as Civil War combatants.
Lancaster Town Band Concert
August 5th, 7 p.m. at Oxford Park. Rain date scheduled for August 12th. There is a possibility that the new band shelter may be constructed in time for the event.
Lancaster area Chamber of Commerce
November 18th, biannual wine tasting event. $40 per ticket.
Lancaster Opera House
October 4th. Fundraiser and ball commemorating the building of the Opera House in 1897.
Ecumenical Service
Presbytarian Church on Broadway. No date set yet.
Town Wide food drive
Donations to go to the Lancaster Episcopal Church and DepeTri-Community food pantries.
Lancaster Town Celebration Dinne
Tuesday, September 16th, at Salvatores. $35/person, cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., red and white wine served with dinner. Program will include unveiling of time capsule contents, honoring of Lancaster’s oldest resident, music, etc.
