Legislator Kathy Konst reported that bridge repairs on the Cemetery Road Bridge at Erie Street in Lancaster are moving forward.
Norfolk Southern Railroad, which owns the North side of the bridge, has almost completed repairs addressed by a Red Flag in the August 2007 Bridge Inspection Report.
Konst stated, "Two steel columns have been placed under and welded to girders against the North abutment wall. A concrete foundation has been poured to support these columns."
She continued on by saying, "There is a 2-3 day cure period for the concrete. Once the concrete is dry, the beams will be jacked into place and a mortar pad (concrete spacer) will be placed to fill in the area between the beam and the concrete foundation."
Repairs to the South side of the bridge, which is owned by Erie County, will continue next week.
A ledge has been built to allow workers access to the area where concrete will be poured at the southern abutment.
Deck work to address a hole on Cemetery Road will also be done. This work is in response to a Yellow Flag issued to the County.
Previously, County workers chiseled away loose concrete from girders on the underside of the bridge and reinforced the netting below them.
An expedited bridge re-inspection was requested of the State by Legislator Konst after she brought the issue of bridge and infrastructure safety to a meeting of the Legislature's Public Safety Committee this June.
In August, Konst held public information meeting with the State, County and Public Officials at the Lancaster Town Hall to address immediate repairs to the bridge and plans for reconstruction.
In addition, engineers were there to address residents' concerns and to dispel misinformation pertaining to bridge safety.
