Today’s extraordinary weather was perfect to unveil and dedicate a children’s garden in South Buffalo. More than 300 residents came together and shared in the joy of a project that took two years to complete. Tim Russert’s Children’s Garden was officially opened today; a place where people can sit and relax, read books from the neighboring Dudley Branch Library and enjoy summer’s nature with children. Tim Russert; the South Buffalo boy who made it big in the journalistic and political world was greeted with cheers when he arrived.

South Buffalo Alive is an organization devoted to beautifying the communities and improving the quality of life for its residents with wondrous gardens and green space. The Children’s Garden baring Russert’s name; centered in the neighborhood of South Park Avenue where Tim Russert grew up, was achieved through donations by himself. Extra grant money was received to support the project from Assemblyman Brian Higgins and Erie County Legislator Mark Schroeder. Commissioner of Public Works, Joe Giambra provided the staff and the equipment needed to ready the property.

The garden could not have been possible without the many volunteers and hundreds of man-hours. The South Buffalo Alive organization affirms, “It was truly a labor of love to the community. We hope you enjoy the garden, watch over it, and protect it so that it can be enjoyed for generations to come.”

Tim Russert who is on the road promoting his new book Big Russ & Me said,
“You should know that this is the #1 book in America. Within 24 hours it’s number one on Amazon and number one on Barnes & Nobel.”

He said the book is giving him the opportunity to go around the country and talk about the two things he loves, South Buffalo and his father (other-wise known as) Big Russ.

“The premise of the book is simply… the older I get, the smarter my father seems to get.”
Russert said with a laugh.

“Libraries and reading are essential,”
he confirmed after spending countless hours of his childhood at the Dudley Branch Library.

“This is the first book that I brought to Buffalo and I’m going to dedicate it to the Dudley Library right now”
Russert said as he signed the book and presented it to a librarian.

Tim Russert’s first authentic writing experiences came when he was a student at St. Bonaventure Elementary, where he became editor of the school newspaper as a means to channel his excessive (writing) energies.

“It was my first job in journalism and I never looked back”
Tim Russert said he owes former St. Bonaventure teacher, Sister Lucille a lot and acknowledged her presence at today’s dedication of the Children’s Garden.
