Buffalo Sports
Dear Ralph,
I sure miss our many chats at Fredonia when the Bills were training there. After all, those were the times when the Bills were romping over all competition to advance to four straight Super Bowls. Nothing against St. John Fisher but those sure were the good old days.
I was going to write this after the New England opener since most everyone (including myself) feels that it will be the same old story, especially with Brady back at QB. My hope is that the Bills will at least be competitive but Belichik will probably want to run it up. Then, again, he might pull the starters out earlier than expected.
Now, I'm looking forward to 2010 with the big question centering on renewing all those 55,000+ season ticket holders.
When (I wish I could say if) the Bills don't improve on the stranghlehold Dick Jauron has on 7-9, I began thinking how we could get the fans into the sold out park next year.
These suggestions may shock everyone but - hey - give it a try. Here it comes:
First and foremost, Jauron is gone and the first move is NOT TO HIRE ANOTHER HEAD COACH.
I mean - don't have a head coach. Look what's been happening with the likes of Williams, Mularkey and now Dick Jauron. As far as Jauron is concerned, he's taking a lot of heat - deservedly. His career record as a head coach heading to Monday night is a pretty bad 57 wins 79 losses. With Buffalo, he's had losing seasons. So much for head coaches. Now, here's what will really turn the NFL on its ears:
1. Do not employ a head coach.
2. Make Jim Kelly the offensive coordinator
3. Make Kent Hull the offensive line coach
4. Make Bruce Smith defensive line coach
5. Make Thurman Thomas running back coach
6. Make Steve Tasker special teams coach
7. Make James Loften/Andre Reed receivers coaches
8. Make Bobby April the secondary coach. He's got a good mind.
These experienced players will throw their heart and experience into the jobs. They will really be welcomed by the players now on the team because they have been there; done that; and most wound up in the Hall-of-Fam with Tasker and Reed ready to join them.
There's four NFL Hall-of-famers on that list = 5 when you include yourself.
I doub there wouldn't be a fan disagreeing with these moves. First of all, they would be rooting for them as opposed to "Get him out of there" that has been heard about the head coaches in the past decade who've paraded their losing ways on the sidelines, game planning, play calling, etc. All they've done is lose and bring woes to the loyal throngs who want nothing more than to win. It's been a decade, Ralph and things don't look too good.
I know that, initially, you're saying "Art, are you kidding? I've listened to you and watched you on TV but maybe retirement has taken its toll on you."
Well, Ralph, this letter shows that I've still got my mind working. Let's really show the NFL that Buffalo will be making bold moves - with the first being the only team in the history of the NFL (if not football itself) by not employing a head coach. The national media certainly will watch to see this works out. But the fans certainly would show their support for those Super Bowl heroes.
The list of players mentioned here certainly know what to do; they've proved it on the field and will bring out the winning intensity the team has been lacking under the parade of "failed-head-coaches."
That's it Ralph. Hopw to see you soon and best wishes for another ten years with us.
Your pal,
Art Wander
