Watching a true offense at work

It was interesting reading Jerry Sullivan's column in the Buffalo News re: hiring Jim Kelly as a consultant to the Buffalo Bills.

While moving in that direction, may I call your attention to the final game of the collegiate season at the end of this month - a game that will be televised on ESPN between Oregon and Oregon State. Why? Read on.

Last Saturday night, I was ready to watch the Phillies-Yankees game three but after a few innings, I tired of the pace of the game and decided to watch some football. I debated between Notre Dame and Southern Cal. The Irish were in a blowout so I decided to see how former NFL coach Pete Carroll would do with his 5th rated Trojans of Southern Cal.

That’s when I watched the rebirth of Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed. Head Coach Chris Kelly of Oregon, hired in March of this year, unleashed a powerful offense to hand Carroll a humiliating 47-20 defeat.

Oregon's offense raced to the tune of 613 yards.

How did Chris Kelly do it? With the no-huddle or Buffalo's famed K-gun offense that saw his quarterback, running back and receivers running roughshod over former NFLer Carroll and Southern Cal. The look on Pete’s face said it all as he had no answers to the fast pace, yard churning attack that the Oregon coach poured against his hapless Tojans.

Again – 613 total yards for Oregon. That’s not two games worth. It was one game – Saturday night against the Heralded Southern Calirofnia team.

Believe me, this team performed in the same exciting manner that the Buffalo Bills did in the early 90s when Kelly-Thomas-Reed and cast terrorized opponents as they sped to four straight Super Bowl appearances.

If anyone saw that game Saturday night, they would agree that the Buffalo eyes haven’t seen anything like it in the last 20 years. Southern Cal couldn’t stop them. How many times did the Ducks have 3rd and 15, 2nd and 20 and make the first down. Touchdown after touchdown buckled the knees of Carroll, the former head coach of the NFLs New York Jets.

Which brings me to the present Buffalo Bills. It goes without saying that going after coaches who have been fired, resigned or left their NFL teams hasn’t produced much for Buffalo over the past decade. If Ralph Wilson wants to bring back the glory of the early 90s and vault the team back into contention - that question was answered Saturday night by the convincing Oregon devastation of Southern Cal.

Hire Chris Kelly from Oregon University and let him bring the excitement back to the Bills. If he can do what he did in only one season at Oregon, he should be given a good look. Kelly has a swagger that resembles his famous namesake in Buffalo – Jimbo.

Go the extra yard and hire Jim Kelly to be offensive coordinator.

So – Ralph. Let Jauron go = please. Forget the has-been former coaches in the NFL and bring in an innovative guy like Chris Kelly who lights up the sidelines…..and the scoreboard.

If anyone has an opportunity to watch the Oregon Ducks play the rest of the season…….do it. This Saturday they face Stanford but the ESPN is only a few weeks away against Oregon State. You will be impressed and likely call for Ralph Wilson to bring that coach in. So long Jauron – hello Chris Kelley.
