In a game where it seemed nobody wanted to win, the Buffalo Bills finally prevailed over the New York Jets on the second possession of overtime at the Meadowlands, winning 16-13 on Rian Lindell’s 47-yard field goal.
In a penalty filled game, (22 were called - 8 on Buffalo, many felt that maybe the game should have ended in a tie, as the quarterbacking was nothing to rave about.
The saying could easily go, “You can take the kid out of California – but you can’t take California out of the kid.” That probably held true for Jets QB Mark Sanchez who was used to playing in the warmth of California. He played in the chill of New York and the record will speak for itself. He completed only 10 of 29 passes for 119 yards and get this – 5 interceptions…..that’s right 5 picks off Sanchez. The Bills also picked off another pass on a failed field goal try to give them 6 interceptions that led to only 16 points.
The last pick off Sanchez in OT gave the Bills good field position that led them inside the 30 yard line, just enough yardage for Lindell to boot the game winner giving Buffalo a 2-4 record on the season and dropping the Jets out of a tie for first place in the AFC East with New England which whipped Tennessee in the snow behind Brady’s 6 touchdown passes.
While the Bills offense continued to flounder…..the Bills defense had to hold tight in the second half after giving up a whopping 214 rushing yards in the first half alone allowing the Jets to take a 13-3 half-time lead.
On the day, the Jets gained 318 yards on the ground as Thomas Jones picked up 210 yards and Leon Washington added 99 more. The Bills simply couldn’t stop them and the question in the Big Apple is why put the ball in the hands of Sanchez when the ground game was really going great. Granted, much of Jones yards came on two carries – 64 and 71 yards, the latter going for the only touchdown the Jets would have. Thanks to the ground game the Jets outgained Buffalo 414 to 296.
Trent Edwards went down with what was reported as a concussion after completing all 5 of his passes while moving his team in position for a field goal that gave Buffalo a 3-0 lead.
Then it was the Jets fierce running game that produced the next 13 points before the Bills secondary made life miserable for the previously heralded Sanchez who, all of a sudden, is showing his rookie tendencies.
After Edwards left the game, Ryan Fitzpatrick came in and wound up completing 10 of 25 for 116 yards, one interception, but one big touchdown pass to Lee Evans in the third quarter that tied the game
Oh well, it wasn’t pretty but Buffalo finally won a game after 4 straight horrible losses. If the Bills lost this one, it would also be a horrible loss.
Let’s see what the mouth of the New York, Ryan, will be saying after suffering yet another setback to a team the Jets were favored to beat.
