DON'T GET ME STARTED on the Bills coaching staff. So far, Jauron has delivered enough to avoid criticism.
But, as many readers may have noticed, I haven't been pleased nor enamored with the offensive coodinator Steve Fairchild.
On Monday, following the Bills victory over Miami, I heard that Steve Fairchild is at the top of the list for the head coaching job at Colorado State.
I'm rooting for Steve to get - and take - the job.
Why have I been critical of Fairchild? Well, the play calling in the first half-dozen games left a lot to be desired. It seemed to me that he was way too conservative; didn't really have a game plan to attack the winning teams in the NFL; and was extremely cautious with his quarterbacks.
That the Bills now have two great running backs in Lynch and Jackson, Fairchild might loosen up a little against Cleveland. He doesn't do things that challenge a defense.
Case in point might be be his disdain, early in the season, for a quarterback sneak when it was third and very short. How many times have the Bills been stopped when winning or losing games made the difference (Denver/Dallas.)
Certainly his game plans in those for 7-8 games tended to shackle the athleticism of the quarterbacks. Don't you think that J.P. Losman fans clamored for the offense to open things up (as New England does so consistently.) Take for example that double-lateral play the Patriots pulled against Pittsburgh that resulted in a touchdown. Now that was creativity.
How would Losman have fared if he was given more latitude at the line of scrimmage.
Buffalo has moved the ball very well - against Miami and the New York Jets. It's the teams with winning records that brings up the question marks.
That's why I'm rooting for Colorado State to make the decision known and hire Fairchild as its new head coach.
That leaves it to Levy and Jauron to select an offensive coordinator who has imagination; creativity; opens things up and let it all fly.
Remember when Jim Kelly arrived in Buffalo - he was shackled for a couple of years until Ted Marchibroda turned him loose....let him call his own plays as he led the team to 4 straight Super Bowls.
When I was challenging the Bills to open it up with Jim Kelly some 15 years ago, I kept screaming: "Put in a system that fits the players - rather than impose a system that doesn't reflect the talents of the players." What was my reward? "If you don't like it - Get Out of Town."
I can't think of the guy who is assistant to the Patriots offensive coordinator.....but maybe take a look at him.
Lately, the offense has been pretty decent with Trent Edwards at the helm. That doesn't take away from the fact that the conservative game plans in the first half of the season - especially the first three games - needed some better thinking.
If the Bills beat the Browns Sunday....maybe Colorado State will make the decision quickly and hire Fairchild to be its next head coach.
And that's what has me congratulating Fairchild in advance of the selection...and hoping that Harvard and Yale (Levy and Jauron) bring in a creative mind to handle the offense and establish Edwards as a big force in the future on Don't Get Me Started.
