After each loss this season, fans say "It can't get any worse than this." Surprise, it not only got worse, it got absolutely horrible against the Miami Dolphins Sunday afternoon.
There is no other way you can put it – the Bills are a horribly coached team, void of motivation and lack of inspirational leadership (especially from the sidelines and in the booth.
The 0-3 Miami Dolphins laid a licking on the hapless Bills 38-10. In the past two games, Buffalo has been outscored 65-17. You aren't going to win many games averaging 9 points per contest. Lay that at the feet of the offensive brains.
That makes it 8 straight losses in division games. 7-9 might be considered a winning season the way the team is going.
There’s no more sense detailing the history of Dick Jauron’s tenure in Buffalo. The coaching moves made by the Bills continue to haunt them and, as of now, the hope is for next season with yet another high draft choice to give what fans hope will be a new coaching staff.
Alex Van Pelt had one good game – against lowly Tampa. It’s been noted that the Dolphins give up big plays and on 3 occasions Edwards hooked up with Evans and Owens, but the rest of his passes were those short little dinks. The question is why didn’t the Bills exploit that weakness more than they did. That probably even surprised the Dolphins who stacked up the line not fearing a running game. So often you hear, "put it in the hands of the quarterback." Miami dictated the proceedings and Alex Van Pelt and Trent Edwards had no answer.
When the Bills had about a 3rd and 5, Edwards completed a pass that lost 3 yards. That’s how it’s been going The way Trent Edwards performed in the loss, fans will probably be looking at the quarterbacks ready to get into the draft next April
If he's had confidence issues in the past, his performance and this loss isn't going to help his case.
Miami coaches probably knew that the “Checkdowns” would be coming and they prepared for it. The game was over in the first quarter when, on the Bills first four possessions, they didn’t register a first down and it looks as if punter Brian Moorman may set a record for punts this season since the chains simply don’t keep moving.
For the entire game the Bills managed to get ONLY 10 first downs. At the half it stood 11-4, favor of Miami.
How poorly did Edwards and the offense perform? The QB was 14 of 26 for 192 yards (most of that in one drive.) But even with that drive, he suffered his 3rd interception of the game. He was also sacked 6 times. The creativity of the Bills offensive braintrust may have wilted in the heat.
Marshawn Lynch returned to action following his suspension but the Miami coaches were well prepared. Lynch carried 8 times for 4 yards while Fred Jackson carried 9 times for 42 yards. That’s 13 carries for 51 yards. Not too productive. Several times these players were thrown for losses.
Those talented receivers weren’t equally productive. Owens had 3 catches, Evans 2. That’s about half of the passes that went to Lynch and Jackson…..the old “checkdown” plays.
Up until this point, the Bills defense was holding it together hoping the offense could finally get something going. But here come the “Wildcat” Dolphins who whipped the Bills with a whopping 250 yards ON THE GROUND. Ronnie Brown ran for 115 yards plus two touchdowns while Ricky Williams scampered for 85 and a TD.
Attribute that to the failure of the Bills to keep Buffalo’s defense off the field. Miami controlled the ball for 37 minutes to 23 for Buffalo.
That made it easy for QB Chad Henne, thrust into action following the injury to Pennington. All Pennington did was something that Edwards hasn’t been able to do…..move the chains. The Dolphins had scoring drives of 65, 66 and 65 yards and – get this beauty – they were 11 of 19 on third and 4th down situations.
And how many 3rd down plays out of 11 did the Bills convert? One.
Buffalo did manage to get to Henne for sacks a half-dozen times. Henne finished 14 of 22 for 115 yards but, unlike Edwards 3 interceptions, Miami didn’t have a turnover.
