Before going to the Schonert story, the cut list included a couple of players who had their names called positively in games they appeared in the pre-season. It's Jonathan Stupar, the tight end who showed he can get open and catch the ball. The other is Copelan Bryan from the defense. The bigger surprise will come if they don't put these players on the practice squad. With what's been happening at One Bills Drive, what's next.
Maybe I was a little hasty in my criticism of Turk Schonert in the past several columns, though I think he was as responsible as anyone for the woes of the team. But he now comes out with some "inside stuff" not previously published until a WIVB posting. So, I take back 50% of my criticsm of Schonert.
While Dick Jauron said in his statements following the firing of Schonert that he, too, shares some fault for the terrible performances of the Bills this pre-season, the column posted on the WIVB Channel 4 web site found Schonert talking about the differences he had with the head coach.
John Murphy is as close to the Buffalo Bills as anyone in Western New York. In the News 4 Sports article with the veteran sportscaster and play-by-play man by-line, here's what Schonert had to say about Jauron.
Schonert disclosed in the article that he was told about the Jauron decision to let him go during a Friday morning meeting. He then spoke about serious philosophical differences he had with Jauron regarding the Bills offense.
Here's the quotes:
"He (Jauron) told me the offense wasn't simple enough for him. We had too many formations, too many pays. I didn't simplify it to his liking. He wants a 'Pop Warner' offense. He (Jauron)limited me in formations, and limited me in plays. He's been on my back all offseason."
WIVB posted that article on its site and the last paragraph was interesting since it stated that (as of Friday) the Bills did not name an offensive coordinator and that Van Pelt would be working with running back coordinator coach Eric Studesville. Van Pelt will be calling the plays.
In the Saturday Buffalo News, Jim Kelly stated that he has confidence in Van Pelt. Yet, many fans around the Niagara Frontier have been suggesting that the Bills hire Jim Kelly, who entered the Hall-of-Fame on his great and very successful career with the team. If anyone knows no-huddle, it's Kelly.
I agree with the many fans that Kelly would be an ideal addition to the Bills coaching staff. He and Ted Marchibroda worked so well together that it made the life of Marv Levy so much easier and got the coach into the Hall-of-Fame as well.
Which brings me to my other thoughts previously posted on this site. Jauron may stay through the season no matter what happens. Then the Bills, who will want to have renewals on the 55,000+ season ticket holders will finally hire a high profile coach and coordinators that will generate enthusiasm for the 2010 season.
The biggest question continues: "How long will the Bills put up with Jauron at the helm."
