Solution: Weiss and Clausen

When words wafted in the rumor mill that the Buffalo Bills have had "contact" with former Notre Dame coach and former offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots Charlie Weiss to become head coach of the Bills, the pulse started beating a little more rapidly.

Forget his record at Notre Dame - Weiss has always been known as a great offensive mind - just what the Bills need desperately.

There have been rumors that the Chicago Bears are interested in hiring Weiss as the offensive coordinator in the windy city - but Buffalo could snare him by offering him the head coaching job.

Add the emergence of his ND QB Clausen in the mix, then you will have a pair that have been together for three years. Clausen came into the draft as a result of Weiss leaving Notre Dame.

First Weiss. The Bills should waste no time in getting him inked even without a General Manager in place. Whoever would take over that position, certainly would want the mind of Weiss to lead the Bills on the sidelines, especially with his great knowledge of the New England Patriots offense - which to this date is very solid.

The problem is getting Clausen. There are a couple of teams drafting in the top 10 that need quarterbacks and, most likely, the Washington Redskins, St. Lous Rams, Cleveland Browns - even Kansas City Chiefs might be leaning between Clausen and Oklahoma QB Bradford. Since the latter suffered a season-ending injury, they might take Clausen. Would that leave Bradford out there with Seattle, Cleveland, Kansas City picking ahead of the Bills?

Strange to mention this but I assume that the Bills fans will be looking for Buffalo to lose its final game of the seasona gainst the Colts to finish with a 5-11 record, insuring a top tier pick, hoping that a couple of teams ahead of them would win.

Right now, the Bills are looking for a top 10 pick. So let the wheeling and dealing begin. They might be able to move up in the draft through some creative thinking as follows:

Since Freddie Jackson has emerged as a top flight running back for the Bills - trade Marshawn Lynch and Buffalo's first round pick to, perhaps, move into the top 3 in the pecking order. Buffalo could pick a RB in later rounds since there seem to be some good ones out there.

Assume that the top teams will be looking for offensive line and defensive line help, it would be a big plus if both Bradford and Clausen slipped down to Buffalo's pick.

That's where Weiss would come in and tell the brass that he knows the kid and what he can do so it's important to listen to him.

Beginning at around midnight next Sunday, the Bills can begin talking to those people on other teams who have concluded their seasons. Naturally, they can't talk to people who are in the playoffs.

Buffalo can beat everyone to the punch by getting Weiss on board and let the fun begin.

Another interesting scenario would be if the Bills know that someone ahead of them in the draft was going to take Clausen - then let the kid proclaim (just as John Elway and Eli Manning did) that he wants to play for his former coach and mentor in Buffalo. That's where some trading can take place.

Bottom line.........raise the hopes of season ticket holders by inking Weiss.........now.
