Buffalo Sports
I wonder if the Bills players talked to the Detroit Lions players asking them how they felt last year when they didn’t win a game all season long – a horrible 0-16.
The way the Bills offense is playing, they very well might suffer the same embarrassment if the exhibition season is any indication. Let’s see if I can be gracious in describing this exhibition season. Why do words like putrid; horrible; stinky; lousy; garbage; and all those other words that can’t be printed on this family friendly page.
Oh, Dick Jauron will probably say that the starters weren’t in the last game of the pre-season. Hello? What has the starting offense done in the previous four games? Nothing – only a field goal here and there. Even in the Thursday night's game at the Ralph, Lindell missed a 30-yarder.
Jauron will also utter that there was no game planning. How in the world can all other teams put points on the board while Buffalo keeps getting blanked.
And then will come that weekly refrain from Jauron, "We'll look at the films and we'll learn from this game and the pre-season. We'll work on correcting our mistakes."
We’ve been hearing that for too many 7-9 seasons under Jauron and Schonert.
Last week, I jokingly said that the cuts by Saturday should include Jauron and Turk Schonert. They might hit the computer to get those applicatiions ready. The sparse crowd really had nothing to cheer about in those 5 games. Yes, they beat Chicago but the offense didn’t score any touchdowns.
The Bills had the ball with a 2nd and goal from the 5-yard line and couldn’t punch it in. After Tristan David bolted for a 79-yard touchdown run to put it away for the Lions in the 4th quarter with under 1:30 left in the game, Gibron Hamden led the team down the field.
Buffalo had a 1st and goal from the 7-yard line – then 2nd and goal from the 4 but on a 3rd down pass from the 2 – Hamden’s pass intended for Steve Johnson was picked off giving Buffalo a 1-4 record in the pre-season with an offense that has the fans totally confused.
If the Bills can’t beat what has been a hapless team over so many years, what can fans expect this season when the starting offense – and now the reserves – can’t even get into the end zone in 5 games. That’s 20 quarters of football where the noses of the Bills couldn’t smell the end zone.
You can bet that the teams the Bills will be facing this season will be looking at these games.
The busiest guy at the game may have been the hawker selling programs with the lineups because Jauron “rested” most of his first-stringers, including Trent Edwards. “Rested?” They’ve been "resting" for all of the 5 games they’ve played.
You know Jauron. He’ll probably single out some players who made a couple of plays but that won’t cut it with the die-hards. Scoring touchdowns is the key to winning games and the Bills have not done that.
Confidence? How can they have any confidence with the pressure they’ll feel when they open the season in a little more than a week. And they will be facing one of the best offenses in the league, with a not-too-shabby defense in the home of the New England Patriots – with a healthy Tom Brady.
All that hope, promise, hoopla before training camp has fans wondering how they could have mustered such hope, promise and hoopla.
This is about the most negative article I’ve ever written on this web site but it’s one that has me more than worried about the upcoming season. Certainly the media can’t ignore the futility of the Bills. Fans will need to reap some surprises in what is a tough schedule.
But when they can't punch it in when they have a 2nd and goal at the 5, then 3rd and goal from the 2 - that would frustrate a frog looking for water.
Here’s the statistics with the big one being 0 points from the offense. Fitzpatrick was 9 of 17 for 78 yards and 1 interception. Hamden had the same numbers of 9/17 and the interception on his last toss from the Detroit 2-yard line.
The running game? Hall lugged the ball 11 times for 28 yards; McIntyre 7 times for 29 yards. The longest run from scrimmage was 11 yards by Hall.
There is a bright spot. Tight end Stupar again was the leading receiver, grabbing 4 balls but for only 29 yards. He had a good exhibition season as the leading receiver.
for Detroit, Stafford and Bollinger connected on 16 of 28 for 200 yards. But the Lions chewed up the Bills defense on the ground to the tune of 279 yards. Combined passing and rushing, the Lions gained 429 yards – that’s a lot.
Whew. I finally got all this off my chest and will now wait for the start of the season when – if the stars are properly aligned – the Bills might score an offensive touchdown.
